Here is the perfect purse made from upcycled products. Handmade from colourful sari fabric, they have a unique crochet trim using dried banana plant fibres. Banana plants grow extensively in Sri Lanka, and after the fruit cycle is over, the large fibrous stems are usually destroyed. A process of extracting and drying the fibres creates a yarn that can be woven or crocheted, providing employment for women and disabled people in rural areas of Sri Lanka. With a zip and cream coloured cotton lining, each purse is a labour of love.
